The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special (2022) - TV Review

Mourning the loss of Gamora in the events of Avengers: Infinity War (2018), the Guardians of the Galaxy devise a plan to cheer Peter up with a Merry Christmas. To do so, Drax and Mantis travel to Earth to get Peter the best present ever: The Legendary Kevin Bacon.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special was a fun adventure comedy. Written and directed by James Gunn, the Holiday Special featured the Guardian’s usual brand of wacky humor and packed full of references from the first two films. While I enjoyed seeing the Guardians in Infinity War (2018), Endgame (2019), and for a brief moment in Thor: Love and Thunder (2022), it just felt right to have Gunn at the helm again.

Even if they are not my favorites among the Guardian’s cast, I enjoyed seeing Mantis (Pom Klementieff) and Drax (Dave Bautista) take the lead. Most of the time, their characters are delegated to background comedic relief, so it was a nice change of pace to have them take the spotlight and show how they really care for Peter and the the Guardians family.

Included within the Special were Christmas cartoon-styled animated flashbacks with a young Peter (Luke Klein), Yondu (Michael Rooker), and Kraglin (Sean Gunn). Following Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017), this was especially touching because it showed more of Yondu’s fatherly side and answered the question of how his action figure collection began. Additionally, Gunn wrote a new Christmas song – “I Don’t Know What Christmas Is (But Christmastime Is Here)” – performed by his favorite band, Old 97’s.

Overall, I really enjoyed seeing the Guardians again and would rate the Holiday Special 4/5 stars. I don’t imagine this will become a yearly classic, but it was an entertaining short and sweet fan-service to help spread Christmas cheer. Watch out Turbo Man! There’s a new superhero-Christmas story in town.
