The Sorcerer’s Apprentice – 4 stars

I’ve been kind of wanting to rewatch this one for a while, so I was glad when it popped up on Hulu. I don’t think I’ve seen it since it came out in the theater in 2010, but it was actually still pretty good.

“The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” is about Dave (Jay Baruchel), a physics nerd in New York City, who is chosen by the sorcerer Balthazar (Nicolas Cage) to become his apprentice. Balthazar, who was one of Merlin’s three apprentices, begins to train Dave in the ways of magic so he can fulfill his role as the Prime Merlinian and stop Horvath (Alfred Molina)and Morgana from raising an army of the dead and save the world from darkness.

This movie was definitely a PG rating and meant for a younger audience, but still very enjoyable with an interesting concept and story. I always love a good King Arthur and Merlin tale, but this one focused on one of Merlin’s apprentices in present day(in 2010). It was also cool to see the voice actor for Hiccup in “How to Train Your Dragon” before he was Hiccup; I recognized his voice almost immediately. The tesla coils scene with OneRepublic’s “Secrets” playing is still amazing. Since seeing the movie when it first came out, I can’t think of this movie without thinking of this song, nor think about this song without picturing the movie. The movie is a little cheesy but enjoyable enough to check out, especially if you’ve never seen it.
