The Boys TV Show on Amazon Video – 4.5/5 stars

Never Meet Your Heroes

The Boys is an Amazon Original on Prime Video about a world with superheroes. Chief among these are The Seven, a group of the most famous heroes who stand for truth, justice and the American way…on camera at least. Behind the scenes, they are just as bad as the rest of us, and the corporation they work for, Vought, covers everything up. The story follows Hughie Campbell (Jack Quaid), an ordinary tech store guy who lives a normal, boring life; that is until his girlfriend bursts into pieces from a speedster running through her. Butcher (Karl Urban), reaches out to Hughie and recruits him to a vigilante team to take revenge on the corrupt superheroes who took everything from them.

We just finished The Boys last night and it was awesome. The Boys was created by Eric Kripke (Supernatural), Evan Goldberg (This Is The End, Superbad) and Seth Rogen (This Is The End, Superbad). It has a darker superhero theme that is somewhat refreshing and reminded me a lot of Watchmen. I loved seeing the vigilante team, or The Boys, working to uncover the Supes’ dirty secrets and shed some light on the so-called heroes. I also enjoyed seeing the other side with (most of) The Seven putting on their heroic and noble facade for the public and then seeing their true colors behind the scenes. A few weeks ago, I saw an advertisement for this show and put it on my calendar as something that might be worth checking out, but it really surprised me how much I liked it. The special effects were surprisingly good, the acting was all around great and the story was interesting enough that the end of each episode had me ready to keep watching onto the next one. To me, all of these combined elements are the indicators of a good quality show.

I highly recommend checking out this show, especially if you already have Amazon Prime and access to Prime Video. Season One had eight episodes, and was already renewed for Season Two before Season One even released. The Boys is fairly graphic, both sexually and violently, so take caution. Every episode had a shocking moment or two where my jaw was wide open, so if you weren’t a fan of Game of Thrones’ violence or nudity, this might not be the show for you. If you can overcome those, however, you’ll be treated to a pretty awesome show.
