The Old Guard – 4/5 stars

A group of mercenaries, who have almost instantaneous healing and have lived for centuries, are hired for a job. When the job doesn’t go exactly as planned, they realize they were set up and must stop their secret of immortality from being exposed to the world.

Another comic book-inspired film, The Old Guard was directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (Shots Fired, The Secret Life of Bees) and written by Greg Rucka, writer of The Old Guard comic book series. I liked it, especially with the Highlander vibes with their immortality and the Wolverine vibes with the quick healing. Even though the idea is nothing new, it still makes for an interesting story. In one scene, the group members went around saying how old they were and which time period they were from. One was from 1812 where he fought with Napoleon, and two others fought against each other in the Crusades. I think this was a really cool idea and would have liked if they expanded on this more, maybe even including flashbacks.

I thought the movie had decent action. I really liked the gun/sword or gun/ax combo they were rocking. Charlize Theron did amazing, as always. If you like Charlize Theron action movies, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t check this one out.

Similarly to Netflix’s Extraction, the ending was left open for a sequel so keep your eyes open for a sequel to be announced.

Overall, I would rate it 4/5 stars. I enjoyed it more than Netflix’s 6 Underground and would recommend it because it has good action, a pretty interesting story, and, if you’re already subscribed to Netflix, it’s free.
