What Makes a Movie a Classic

What makes a movie a classic? I rewatch classic 80s movies with my Dad that came out when he was a teenager, and this got me wondering what movies coming out today will be considered “classics” in 30 years. Well, first we need to discuss what it is that makes a movie a good movie.

My Dad and I were talking about this and how any movie that makes you feel something is a good movie. Whether it makes you feel inspired or sad. Happy or glad (Hey, that rhymed ). But any movie that makes you actually feel something through its story, actors, or music, and actually care what is happening to the characters is a good movie. Some other factors that make a good movie include a good, well-thought out, and original story; good characters, and good actors to portray them; good music that fits the theme of the movie; and a good balance of action, although not necessarily violence, but more exciting than the slow parts. Taking all these factors into consideration, I believe would make a movie a classic.

With all of these elements needed to create a “classic”, I got to thinking about which movies from my lifetime that would be good enough to show my kids in 30 years. For animated movies, I think Toy Story, Spirit, and the Lion King. For superhero movies, most of the Marvel movies seem like they will hold up over time, especially Iron Man, Captain America, and Black Panther. Others like The Dark Knight, Wonder Woman, and Spider-Man are always good. My personal favorite movie is Kingsman (that’s supposed to be the picture) because it has awesome action and music, funny humor, and a film style with unique camera angles. Record-breaking movies like Avatar, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens are record-breaking for a reason. Lord of the Rings and The Matrix are a little older, but they still hold up and I love them everytime I watch them. And last, but not least, Elf is a classic Christmas movie that my family and I watch every Christmas. These are just some of the many great movies there are to choose from, and they are ones that I think will be consider “classics” and still be watched 30 years from now.
