New ‘Morbius’ trailer drops hints at a connected Spider-Verse

Sony Pictures Entertainment has released a new trailer for Morbius. This will be the third entry into Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, following Venom and Venom: Let There Be Carnage.

Check it out below.

The character Morbius was created by Roy Thomas and Gil Kane, making his first appearance in 1971 as the villain in The Amazing Spider-Man #101. The character gains vampiric abilities from a failed experiment meant to cure his rare blood disease. His abilities include super strength, speed, heightened senses including night vision and echolocation, accelerated healing, flight and hypnotism. From the trailer, it appeared he also had the power to control bats. Overtime, Morbius evolved into an anti-hero attempting to cure his condition while battling his lust for human blood.

The film stars Jared Leto as Dr. Michael Morbius, alongside Matt Smith as Loxias Crown, Jared Harris, Adria Arjona and Tyrese Gibson. The movie will be directed by Daneil Espinosa, known for his work on Life and Safe House, and will be co-written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, who worked together on Lost in Space (2018), The Last Witch Hunter and Dracula Untold.

The trailer featured a multitude of references including Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man, Tom Hardy’s Venom and an appearance of Michael Keaton’s Vulture from the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man: Homecoming. Additionally, the trailer had a Daily Bugle newspaper with references to The Rhino and Black Cat as well as a shot of an Oscorp building with the same logo from The Amazing Spider-Man films. This could be a hint that after the events in Spider-Man: No Way Home, these three universes are now officially connected.

Given the character’s vampiric nature, it’ll be interesting to see if there is any reference to Mahershala Ali’s Blade, set to be introduced into the MCU in the future. Morbius arrives in theaters Jan. 28.
