Extraction – 4/5 stars

Tyler Rake (Chris Hemsworth), a black market mercenary, is hired to extract Ovi Mahajan (Rudharksh Jaiswal), the son of a drug lord, who was kidnapped by his father’s rival. But when the mission goes sideways, Rake must escort the son out of a city with the entire dirty police force trying to hunt them down.

Netflix’s Extraction was released April 24 and was directed by Sam Hargrave (stunt coordinator of Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War and Captain America: Civil War) and written by Joe Russo (Co-director of Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War and Captain America: Civil War and Captain America: Winter Soldier) and Ande Parks who wrote Ciudad, the graphic novel this movie was based on.

I thought Extraction was a good action movie. The action scenes were awesome and realistic with great choreography with a great balance between gunfights and hand-to-hand combat. It reminded me a lot of John Wick’s action where each punch feels solid and each gun shot crisp. Check out a clip of this here. Another aspect of the film that really stood out to me was the directorial style, which was a pleasant surprise. Like 1917, the camera followed the action up staircases and in or behind most car chases. I’m a big fan of this style because it feels like you’re right there in the action instead of sitting on the sidelines.

Towards the end, there was an emotional scene and that really showed the emotional bond between Rake, a man who has lost everything, and Ovi, a kid who has nothing. I thought this was executed very well both with the music and visuals.

It was cool getting to see Hemsworth in a role other than Thor, and I thought Jaiswal also played his role very well. Overall, the movie was good. Not great but definitely worth a watch if you have Netflix and are looking for a new, fresh action movie. I’d rate it 4/5 stars and would recommend giving it a shot.
