Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) – Movie Review

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

After a devastating attack from Godzilla, Monarch employs the help of Kong and his protectors to lead them to an energy source within Hollow Earth. Along the way, however, Godzilla and Kong cross paths and must fight to see who will be the Alpha Titan. There can be only one!

The crossover MonsterVerse event between two of the most iconic monsters in cinematic history is finally here. Godzilla vs. Kong had epic monster fights and was a completely entertaining movie. I found myself quickly impressed with the shear size of these creatures and with how far technology and special effects has come to create a movie of this scale.

The story wasn’t great, however, I wasn’t really expecting it to be. This is a monster movie after all and monster movies aren’t generally known for their intricate and well rounded stories. We are here to see two hulking creatures fight, and this movie delivered that. Even still, there were a few leaping of plot points and skimming over details. A few times throughout the movie, I wasn’t exactly sure why they were doing what they were doing. Especially having not seen Kong: Skull Island or Godzilla: King of the Monsters, they hardly took the time to explain anything about what was going on. Like I said, this won’t be a movie known for its excellent storytelling but it was pretty awesome seeing Godzilla and Kong fight (this was one of my favorite scenes in the gif above). It’s probably just a better mindset to skim over the story details and just go with it, appreciating it for what it is. Fighting monsters and lots of action.

I was very impressed with the visuals and special effects of this movie, especially the sheer size and appearance of the creatures. They did a fantastic job creating them to look equally realistic and menacing. That, along with the action sequences containing two 500-foot-tall creatures duke it out made for a fun and entertaining movie.

Overall, I’d rate this movie 3 ½ / 5 stars. I’m not the biggest fan of monster movies in general, but this one was definitely entertaining and I’m glad I saw it. And, had it not been released on HBO Max, I most likely would have wouldn’t have seen it at all. If you have seen previous MonsterVerse movies and have an idea of what to expect, I have no doubt you’ll enjoy this movie and are in for a treat. The action between the monsters was great and will have you on the edge of your seat cheering them on. I guess the only question is…Team Godzilla or Team Kong?
