Live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender casting update

Avatar: The Last Airbender is one of the most beloved animated shows in recent years, spanning three seasons from 2005 to 2008. The show received critical appraise for its characters, cultural references, themes, as well as covering ideas such as genoicde and imperialism, often absent from children’s shows.

Netflix is creating a live action adaptation of the series following Aang, Sokka and Katara as they attempt to save the world by stopping the Fire Nation. The adaptation was being helmed by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, the same creators of the original Nickelodeon series, but they announced Aug. 2020 that they were stepping away due to creative differences. In Feb. 2021, it was reported that the executive producer Albert Kim was brought on as the showrunner.

The cast for the live-action series has Gordon Cormier (The Stand) as Aang, the last air bender and Avatar, Ian Ousley (13 Reasons Why, Big Shots) as Sokka, Kiawentiio (Anne with an E) as Katara, and Dallas Liu (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) as Prince Zuko. According to AvatarNews_, the series is casting for Azula who, although it has yet to be confirmed by Netflix, is thought to be played by Prince Zuko actor Dallas Liu’s 17-year-old sister.

There are still multiple characters yet to be cast that appear in the first season, including Uncle Iroh, Suki and Firelord Ozai,that play a pivotal role in the entirety of the series. 

There are still no details confirmed by Netflix, it is believed by multiple sources that production will begin in Nov. 2021 and run through April 2022.
