Lupin (2021) – Season 1 Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Inspired by the Gentleman Burglar Arsène Lupin, Assane (Omar Sy) uses a similar skill set to get revenge on those who framed his father and sent him to jail.

Lupin was good and more enjoyable than I thought it would be. While originally I thought it was just another heist movie, it turned out to be a more elaborate series that starts with a heist and then continues on as a revenge story.

Before you get too excited, just know that Lupin is a French series. For the last few years, I have had very little interest in watching foreign shows and movies. I tried to watch a few foreign but with the English I heard not matching how the characters speak, it was too distracting to enjoy. I decided to give it another chance, after being recommended to watch them with the original language and English subtitles. This is a game changer for me, making all the difference.

Omar Sy did a great job with Assane and really nailed the charismatic, gentleman thief who is always one step ahead. If you enjoy heist movies, or movies like Now You See Me, you should definitely give Lupin a shot. It was a quick 5-episode season, but I’m excited to see the direction next season will take the show, whenever that may be (Update – Lupin Part 2 announced to be released Summer 2021).

I’d rate Lupin a solid 4/5 stars and recommend checking it out. Especially if, like me, you are feeling the slow drip of new content.  While different than what I was originally expecting, Lupin was overall enjoyable and with only five episodes, definitely worth the watch.
