New ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ clip gives first look at Terror Dog

PlayStation has released a clip from the upcoming Ghostbusters: Afterlife and spoke with director Jason Reitman about his family connection to the franchise.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife follows two children who, after moving to a small town, discover the secret behind their grandfather’s Ghostbuster legacy. The film takes place over 30 years after the original movies and acts as a direct sequel.

Check out the clip below.

The clip features Paul Rudd’s character, Mr. Grooberson, stumbling upon the Terror Dog likely from the original Ghostbusters movie in a grocery store. After catching its attention, Grooberson makes a mad dash through the store with the Terror Dog right at his heels leaving nothing but destruction in its wake.

Jason Reitman’s connection to Ghostbusters stems from the fact that he is the son of Ivan Reitman, director of Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II. Ivan Reitman is also involved in Afterlife, this time as a producer.

“I’m the child of a Ghostbuster, so I guess it should be no surprise that when it came to making a Ghostbusters movie, I would make a movie about the granddaughter of a Ghostbuster,” Jason Reitman said. “And there was no way to do this except with my father right by my side.”

According to Jason Reitman, the movie uses a blend of digital and practical effects to maintain the style of the original films. Among these is the full-sized animatronic Terror Dog featured in the clip above, being controlled by puppeteers.

“It’s the kind of filmmaking which I think gives the movie its feel and its tone,” said Jason Reitman. “It’s that grounded camera work. It’s being on real sets instead of green screen stages. So when you stand in front of the Terror Dog and it looks you in the eyes, you feel that.”

He also said that the movie will be scattered with Easter eggs referencing the original movies that only true fans will spot. Some of these were hinted at such as the Ghost Sniffer that Bill Murray’s character used in Dana’s Apartment, as well as a straightened slinky from one of Egon’s lines from the original movie.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife will be released in theaters Nov. 19.
