There will also be surprise cameos throughout the movie of Charles Martinet, best known for voicing Mario, Luigi, Wario, and Waluigi in the Super Mario Bros. video game series.

The news was announced by Shigeru Miyamoto, creator of the Mario and The Legend of Zelda game franchises, who has worked in conjunction with Chris Meledandri of Illumination to make this movie possible. Illumination has made previous animated films such as Despicable Me, Sing and The Secret Life of Pets.

The film will be co-directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, who previously worked together on Teen Titans GO! Matthew Fogel, acting as screenwriter for this movie, is also no stranger to animation with experience writing The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part and Minions: The Rise of Gru.

The movie will act as an adaptation of the famous game, revolving around a plumber named Mario who must travel through an underground maze to save a captured princess.

While it may be a while before we can catch a glimpse of Mario on the big screen, it was announced that the movie will release Dec. 21, 2022 in North America, and that the release dates for Japan, Europe and other regions will be announced at a later time.
