Outside the Wire (2021) – Movie Review

Rating: 2.5 out of 5.

In the near future, when a drone pilot disobeys orders resulting in the death of American soldiers, he is sent overseas to the frontlines. There he teams up with a top secret android to go behind enemy lines and stop a nuclear attack against the United States.

With Outside the Wire, something was just missing for me. It was another just-OK generic action flick, but did nothing to really shine. Going into it, I was expecting Extraction-level action and when that was missing, the movie just fell flat.

While it started off as an interesting idea, I found that up to the halfway point I was just getting bored. There was no reason for me to be invested in the characters or story. Then, when I thought it was picking up a little, the movie ended up just disappointing. There were some Anti-War/Anti-US ideas in the movie but the execution of them just didn’t work for me as the motivation of the antagonist.

There were a few cool action and parkour scenes. But for the action scenes, they used a weird slo-mo style to emphasize the android’s speed and it ended up just looking clunky. Some scenes also had way too many cuts to where I struggled to follow what was happening with the action.

I still like to support straight-to-streaming-service type movies, but something was just missing from Outside the Wire. Overall, I’d rate it 2 ½ / 5 stars. I was pretty disappointed and wouldn’t recommend watching it unless you’re really desperate. And even then, there are many better options.
