Shang-Chi teaser released for lead actor’s birthday

Marvel Studios has released the official poster for the upcoming Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. In addition, Marvel surprised lead actor Simu Liu by releasing the official teaser today for his birthday.

Unlike many other well-known heroes that made the leap from the pages of Marvel comics to the big screen, Shang-Chi has yet to make his live-action debut. But, like the Guardians of the Galaxy, Marvel has a habit of bringing relatively unknown characters into the limelight and making them household names.

While most Marvel movies have some type of magical or technological twist, Shang-Chi will instead focus on martial arts, similar to the Netflix series Daredevil and Iron Fist.

Shang-Chi, also known as Brother Hand and Master of Kung-Fu, is a superhero who first appeared in Special Marvel Edition #15 in 1973. The film, set to be the 25th movie in the Marvel Cinemtatic Universe, will follow Shang-Chi having to confront his past after getting involved with the Ten Rings terrorist organization. This will be Marvel’s first film with a Asian lead, as well as a majority of the cast of Asian descent.

Shang-Chi will be portrayed on screen by Chinese-Canadian actor Simu Liu (Kim’s Convenience). Other notable characters in the trailer included Katy, played by Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians, Ocean’s 8, The Farwell), and Razor Fist, played by Florian Munteanu (Creed II).

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings releases Sep. 3 only in theaters. You can check out the teaser trailer below.
