Should you get a PS5? The future of gaming looks bright in PlayStation’s 2021 Showcase

PlayStation held their annual showcase including a first look at a multitude of video games releasing 2021, 2022, and 2023.

First up was a teaser for the upcoming Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake. The classic game is being made for PS5 by Sony Interactive Entertainment, Lucasfilm Games and Aspyr.

“We’re rebuilding one of the greatest RPGs of all time for a new generation with modern tech, features, visuals and more, while maintaining the integrity of the story and characters that we’ve come to cherish,” said Ryan Treadwell, lead producer of Aspyr Media.

Next we saw an action-packed first trailer for Project Eve. From SHIFT UP Corporation, the game follows Eve, a paratrooper sent back to a destroyed Earth to fight the NA:tives.

Gearbox gave us a look at Tiny Tina’s Wonderland, a full standalone game following the adventures of the Borderlands 2 DLC: Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep. The game is currently available for preorder and will release March 25, 2022.

Square Enix and Luminous Productions showed a glance at their new upcoming game Forspoken, set to release Spring 2022. The game follows Frey, a young woman who is transported to the world of Athia where she has magical powers and must face off against monsters in the hopes of returning home.

Ubisoft showed some of Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Extraction, a cooperative multiplayer game where players fight against the parasitic aliens, the Archaeans. The game will be released on all platforms in Jan. 2022.

On Oct. 5, Remedy Entertainment will release Alan Wake Remastered on PS4 and PS5. The original game was released in 2010 on Microsoft Windows and Xbox 360, so this remaster will finally give PlayStation users the chance to experience the story-driven horror game.

Tango Gameworks revealed a look at GhostWire: Tokyo. In the game, the player has a variety of psychic and paranormal abilities that they can use to combat the supernatural forces that have overrun Tokyo. The game will release in 2022 on Microsoft Windows and as a timed console exclusive for PS5.

On Oct. 26, Edios Montreal is releasing Guardians of the Galaxy, a story-driven action-adventure game. Players play as Star-Lord who has recently formed the Guardians of the Galaxy as a group of heroes-for-hire. The game will be released on all platforms.

Bloodhunt is a new free-to-play battle royale game that was released Sep. 7 for early access on PC and is set to release on PS5 later in 2021. The game was developed and published by Sharkmob and has players play as vampires battling against each other using melee weapons, ranged weapons and their vampiric powers.

Arkane Studios released an official story trailer for Deathloop, set to release Sep. 14 on PS5 and PC. In it, players play as Colt, an assassin who is stuck on the island of Black Reef in a time loop. 

Awaceb gave a first look at their tropical open world adventure game, Tchia. The game was inspired by New Caledonia and features a young girl with the ability to mind-hop into other animals and objects.

Insomniac Games revealed a teaser for their next Marvel game, Wolverine. While the game is still early on in its development, “[Insomniac’s] goal here is to not only respect the DNA of what make the character so popular, but also look for opportunities to make it feel fresh and truly reflect the Insomniac spirit,” said Ryan Schneider, Head of Franchise Strategy & Studio Relations at Insomniac Games.

Insomniac also provided a trailer for Spider-Man 2, coming exclusively to the PS5 in 2023. In it, it looks like Peter and Miles will have to team up against Kraven the Hunter and Venom.

Polyphony Digital gave a look at Gran Turismo 7, arriving exclusively on the PS4 and PS5 March 4, 2022.

Last, but certainly not least, was a first look at God of War: Ragnarok from Santa Monica Studio. The game will follow Kratos and an older Atreus trying to stop Ragnarok from happening and will act as a finale to the series’ Norse era.

During the showcase, it was also announced that Rockstar Games is releasing Grand Theft Auto V for PS5 March 2022, and that Naughty Dog is remastering Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and Uncharted: Lost Legacy for PS5 and PC.
