A sequel to The Rocketeer titled “The Return of the Rocketeer” is in the works at Disney.

The movie will be written by Ed Ricourt (Now You See Me, Jessica Jones) and follow a retired Tuskegee airman who straps on the jetpack and takes up the hero’s mantle. Deadline reported that David and Jessica Oyelowo are set to produce the movie, with the possibility of David filling the role of lead actor.

The 1991 movie, based on Dave Stevens comic of the same name, follows stunt-pilot Cliff Secord finding the jetpack and using it to become a hero. In doing so, he draws the attention of the FBI and the Nazis who want to use the jetpack as a weapon. The movie was directed by Joe Johnston and starred Bill Campbell as the lead, Jennifer Connelly and Timothy Dalton.

In the process of creating the original movie, the creator Dave Stevens and writers Danny Bilson and Paul De Meo envisioned The Rocketeer as a trilogy on par with Indiana Jones. But, after disappointing box office results, plans for continuing Cliff’s story were buried. In 2019, The Rocketeer cartoon released on Disney Junior and had a young girl inherit the jetpack and become a hero, but was cancelled after its first season.

While further details have yet to be unveiled, “The Return of the Rocketeer” movie will be released exclusively on Disney Plus.
