Warner Bros. Superman reboot will have a Black actor as Kal-El

Warner Bros. Superman reboot will star a Black actor as the Man of Steel, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The film is being written by author Ta-Nehisi Coates and produced by J.J. Abrams. It is still unconfirmed who will direct the movie, but Warner Bros. and DC are committed to finding a Black director for the reboot.

With this, it looks like the Warner Bros. is pulling the plug on the Snyderverse. After Zack Snyder’s Justice League released on HBO Max, all that remains of the cast is Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman and Ezra Miller as The Flash.

But even after Snyder’s trilogy, the DCEU will continue on. James Gunn’ Suicide Squad is set to release Aug. 6, 2021; Black Adam, starring Dwayne Johnson, is set to release July 29, 2022; The Flash movie, with Miller reprising his role as the Scarlet Speedster, is set to release Nov. 4, 2022; Aquaman 2 is set to release Dec. 16, 2022; and Shazam! Fury of the Gods is set to release June 2, 2023.

In The Flash, Ben Affleck will return as Batman along with Michael Keaton’s 1989 Batman. The movie will follow the comic story arc Flashpoint, where Barry travels back in time to stop the murder of mother, which creates a ripple effect of disastrous consequences. With this story, DC could possibly be setting up a multiverse like they did in the comics, to encapsulate all their other projects within the same universe.

Unconnected from the DCEU are movies like Matt Reeves’ The Batman and Todd Phillips’ Joker. As of now, the Superman reboot seems to be following this route, unconnected from the DCEU. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Coates’ Superman will closely follow the original comics with Kal-El coming from Krypton to Earth. Other details about the film are still being considered, one of which is the film being a 20th century period piece.
